The Annual Holiday Boccia Tournament

The Cerebral Palsy Society hosted its annual holiday boccia tournament over the weekend of the 23 rd & 24 th January at the Allan Brewster Leisure Centre in Papatoetoe. The event was a 2 day pair’s tournament with each pair being assigned a point’s handicap to help level the playing field.
As following from previous years this was a fun & friendly tournament providing a great opportunity for new players to compete against and play alongside more experienced players as well as allowing volunteers and officials the rare opportunity to get out on the court and test their hand at playing boccia.

The tournament began with pool play on Saturday with each pair playing 6 matches throughout the day. Competition was tight with a number of matches won or lost by less than a point based on the handicap system. Sunday was finals day with the top 4 pairs from each pool playing off for positions 1 – 8 and the bottom 3 pairs from each pool playing for positions 9 – 14. As expected competition heated up as the day progressed with the standard of boccia steadily improving from round to round. At the end of the weekend it was the pair of Chloe Sturt and Judy Orme (Delta) who reigned supreme winning the final 8.4 – 5.0 over the pair of Rebecca Sleeman and Lee Hodgson (Charlie)

A huge thank you to all the volunteers who helped with refereeing and assisting the players and a special mention must go to Michael Northcott for his efforts in running the kitchen and organising lunch each day and also Gabrielle Heaslip for her work at the score bench ensuring the tournament runs to schedule. Both your efforts are greatly appreciated by everyone involved.

Lastly, congratulations to everyone involved for making the tournament a success and we look forward to seeing you all again next year.

Until next time keep rolling……
