Save Auckland Council Disability Advisors
Lobby the Auckland Council Regional Strategy and Policy Committee: 9am Wednesday 26 August 2015
135 Albert Street (unless they move it somewhere more accessible as requested)
Auckland Council is introducing a new ‘ Empowered Communities ’ approach and has disestablished the only Disability Advisors within the Council from the end of September.
There are currently two Disability Advisors in Auckland Council. They are the only staff in the whole of Auckland Council including its CCOs who are solely dedicated to working with disability community and providing specialist disability input to council.
At the Council meeting on 30 July 2015 we presented a petition with over 500 signatures to the Mayor, calling for the Disability Advisor roles to be retained.
At the meeting of the Auckland Council Regional Strategy and Policy Committee on 6 August, Don McKenzie of the Auckland Council Disability Advisory Panel explained the Panel’s concerns about the proposed disestablishment of the roles. The Committee voted not to discuss it, but to send it on to the Chief Executive Committee on 26 August. This is our last chance to persuade Council to keep our Disability Advisors.
