North and South Island Boccia Champs
After a very successful North Island Boccia Championships held at the Allan Brewster Leisure Centre, on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st of June, attention turns to the South Island Championships, to be held Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th of August, at the St Hilda’s Collegiate School Gymnasium, Cobden Street, Dunedin. These tournaments are entry-level Boccia tournaments that are open to anyone with a physical disability and the southern tournament is one of three sanctioned events held this year in which players can compete and earn national ranking points.
The official Boccia NZ newsletter “Get Rolling” reported on the northern tournament and said “on Saturday players fought their way through pool play with the goal of qualifying for the finals/knockout stages and on Sunday the pressure was turned up as pool play concluded and the knockout stages of the tournament began.
The tournament was played in a healthy competitive spirit and spectators were treated to some thrilling action including the BC2/3 competition.”
Great to see Michael Turner win the gold in the BC1 class and veterans Maurice Toon and Greig Jackson fight it out in the BC2/3 Combined grade. In the final result Maurice pipped Greig in a thriller.
