Vehicle Access to Mt Eden / Maungawhau

Good morning, my name is Scott De Silva and I am the Manager Volcanic Cones with Auckland Council. One site I manage is Mt Eden and are seeking your views on a proposal to restrict vehicle access to the summit. The proposal is to reduce impacts on this special site and acknowledge the significance of the site to Mana Whenua and residents and visitors to Auckland. If the proposal is approved it is likely that some form of restriction will occur prior to Christmas 2015.

One aspect of restricting vehicles is how we cater for visitors with limited mobility, this is a real issue for the authority and something I have been working on trying to provide some structure around. One option is to have a system where by visitors who cannot walk to the summit will be able to have access through the gates (to be installed) via a permit system.

My question to you all is do you support the proposal to allow some form of access for visitors with limited mobility?

Do you support the options of a permit system to enable access?

If a permit system was in place would your or your clients expectation be that immediate access be expected or would it be acceptable for a time delay in getting access?

I hope this is clear and you are able to assist me in gathering some good information regarding your areas of responsibility. If there is anything additional please do not hesitate in sending me a message.

I can be contacted either by email or phone.
